What Does a Traumatic Brain Injury Mean?

Commonality of Traumatic Brain Injuries

Most people are aware of the concept of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). That awareness may come from the news, or it may come from knowing someone with a TBI. As doctors and scientists improve their understanding of the brain and how it can be injured, it is becoming apparent that brain injuries may be more common than many people realize, even as the impact of those injuries is only beginning to be understood.

Brain Injuries in the United States

According to research published by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in the United States, approximately 1.7 million people suffer brain injuries in the country each year.

These injuries are the result from a wide range of events:

The list is long and but includes situations that a majority of people find themselves in at one point or another during the year, especially when it comes to motor vehicle accidents. However, when injured in one of these situations, many people do not realize that they have suffered a traumatic brain injury. Minor concussions often do not receive medical attention unless the symptoms – headaches, blurred vision, drowsiness – continue unabated.

What Problems Can Traumatic Brain Injuries Cause?

As noted above, the problems that result from traumatic brain injuries depend upon their severity. Mild brain injuries can result in headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, and trouble sleeping. Generally, these problems subside as the brain heals itself and tend to not be long- lasting. However, every situation is different and even mild brain injuries can have long-term impacts.

Severe brain injuries can have a much more significant impact on a person’s overall functioning. These injuries can result in a long period of unconsciousness followed by amnesia. Depending upon whether the brain injury was caused by a closed head injury or was a result of some object piercing the skull and damaging the brain, the long-term effects can be devastating. The individual may suffer from severe cognitive impairment that limits their ability to work, live independently, or even interact with family and loved ones. Additionally, severe brain injuries can impact an individual’s motor skills, making them dependent upon assistive devices such as walkers or wheelchairs.

What Do Brain Injuries Mean to Those That Are Injured?

For those that suffer traumatic brain injuries, the impacts can be long-term and life-altering. The limitations that can arise from the injury can mean the individual is never able to work again, or at least unable to continue the profession they were in prior to the injury. They may have lifelong pain and suffering, and they may have physical limitations that alter what they may have had planned for the future. Whatever the ultimate impact, it is important that the injured individual have the opportunity to be compensated for their losses.
